Europe is a Swedish hard rock band
originally assembled as a progressive
rock group. The first incarnation of the band was named Force and came together
in 1979. In 1982, the group entered a
Swedish talent contest, competing
against 4,000 bands and they won the
contest and changed their name to
Europe. Their self-titled debut album
was released the following year and sold
well.
In 1985, Europe recorded the soundtrack
for youth movie "On the loose"; at the
end of the year, they began the
recording of their next album "The Final
Countdown" which was released in May
1986. It became a worldwide megahit and
established Europe as one of the biggest
rock bands in the world, having sold
more than 15 million albums ! |

The song "The Final Countdown" was
released as their first single and sold
about 8 million copies and was number 1
in 26 countries. The song, originally
written to be an opening song for their
concerts, became a megahit and, to this
day, still enjoys notable popularity in
many sports arenas and stadiums. |
